This week we had some visitors from NSW Department of Education. They came to see how we use our Interactive Whiteboards.

We showed them our blog and our work with “Scratch”.

Congratulations to the AllStar athletics representatives.

They spent a beautiful day yesterday running, jumping, throwing, hurling and having fun out of school.

They all performed to the max and should be proud that they had the opportunity to be part of this carnival.

I competed in the shot put and discus and running. I had to run 200 metres but I didn’t place.   Josh

In the 200 metre running heat I came first and the finals are next week. I also won the Junior Girls long jump with a jump of 3.15 metres. I will go to the regional carnival for long jump        Naomi

I competed in the Senior Girls long jump – I didn’t ask how far I jumped, but I didn’t make it to the next level.        Nancy

I did the discus at the carnival – the disc is a particular weight and you have to throw it the furthest distance. I didn’t manage to throw it very far.    Gloria

 I jumped in the high jump – I jumped one metre high, but the others jumped even higher.   Kesaia

A random meme has been “floating” around the blogosphere of late and many AllStars have been tagged by friends from other schools and countries. We have discussed the positives and negatives of these memes and have tried to remember to keep safe (no personal details). School based tagging should try to keep on school topics too.

Today we thought we would answer as a class, so we thought of 8 topics we would answer. Then we turned the reults into percentages (maths lesson!!!!!!    ) and here is what we came up with:

1. 43% of AllStars liked MeatLovers pizza.
2. 57% of AllStars don’t like Maths.
3. 29% of AllStars chose science as their favourite subject.
4. 43% of AllStars have finished the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
5. 43% of AllStars liked Athletics for sport.
6. 100% of AllStars love blogging!   
7. 100% of AllStars like playing games (PS2, DSLites, Computer etc)
8. 90% of AllStars like making digital games.

A baffling crime puzzled the police until they called in the investigative minds of the AllStars! Along with Lisa from the CSIRO, the AllStars became real life Crime Scene Investigators as they:

• tested blood samples,

• compared finger prints,

• took footprint plasters,

• looked at DNA,

• compared hair samples,

• looked at oils found at the scene,

• checked bullet casings, 

• and used chromatography to compare pens used.

“We had to look at the evidence that was left behind at the crime scene to work out who was behind a blackmailing plot, and the theft of $200 000 from a safe. There were four suspects who had been identified, but all protested that they were innocent. It was our job to look through the evidence and eliminate or prove a suspect guilty.”

Comparison of Hair: We had to look at samples under the microscope – the sample found at the scene and the suspects. Two of the suspects hair looked the same as the evidence hair.   Celia

Comparison of Fabrics: We compared fabrics from the suspects, with a piece of fabric found on a chair at the crime scene. First we swirled the fabric in some water, then we dropped  a few drops of indicator onto the piece of cloth. We left it for 2 minutes and then we compared the colours to see if it matched the evidence fabric.   Sokeina

Soil Analysis: We had to put some soil samples in a dish and compare them to soil from the crime scene. We dropped a small amount of soil in the dish, then added indicator on top. The indicator turned a different colour according to the acidity of the soil. Each soil sample turned a different colour – but only one matched the soil from the crime scene!  Nadine

Identikit Face: We had to memorize the description of a man seen at the crime scene and build a picture of the person’s face using a computer program. We had to make the picture look exactly like the picture of the man seen at the crime. Tyrone

 Ballistics: We took the bullet found in the sofa at the crime scene and looked at it under the magnifying glass. We then had to try and spot  identical markings on bullets from the suspects guns. We were able to find a match from one of the suspects guns. Marshall

Chromatography: this is when we drew a line on a small sample of paper and put it in water. The colours in the ink seperated and we had to match the ink from the pen used to write the blackmail letter. Gloria & Natalie

Last week two talented and enthusiastic actors visited our school to perform the show “Back to Before”. The show used books that were nominated for  “The Children’s Book Council of Australia” Book Week Awards, to spin an exciting and funny story.

The two main characters were Sam, who was celebrating his birthday, and Mrs McTock who was the old and mysterious neighbour. Mrs McTock invited Sam to visit her in her old and scary house. Sam was tricked into playing a game and a series of crazy adventures, where he met up with Katie, the young Mrs McTock.

Other characters included the Time Keeper, who controlled the game, Sam a boy who was frightened of what he didn’t know,  and a baby called Daisy who had to learn to talk.

By using clues from the books, Katie and Sam were able to escape back to the present time. Sam and Mrs McTock become good friends, they learn that the past and the present are often linked in strange ways, and that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover – meaning things are not always the way they look.

Lots of singing and dancing as well as audience participation meant that everyone had a great time! Even Sandy was heard to hum along and groove a little

VIP – Violinist Impressively Performs!

Our very talented violinist performed recently at the Sydney Opera House. He performed over three nights and we were extremely proud of him.

Not everyone was able to attend the Opera House, so he performed a special lunch-time concert for us in our room.
