Photo A Day = R = Rainforest

Standard

Australia has many types of rainforests but they make up just 0.3% of the total area of Australia.

In the north of Australia are tropical rainforests, and temperate rainforests further south.

Australia’s  tropical rainforests have the highest biodiversity ecosystem which means there are many, many types of animals, insects and plants in rainforests. It has taken tens of millions of years for animals and plants to evolve in their particular rainforest habitat.

“Where the Forest Meets the Sea”  by Jeannie Baker is a great story about an Australian rainforest.

QuadBlogging @ Positively Pulaski

Standard

Last week, as part of our QuadBlogging project,  we practised our commenting on the class blog “Positively Pulaski” .

We thought that we had better find out something about the class before we visited their blog:

1. We found out where their school was using Google Earth:

  • Wisconsin is right at the top of the USA so we knew it would get very cold there in winter
  • Wisconsin is between two of the Great Lakes – Lake Superior and Lake Michigan
  • We noticed there was a lot of grass, fields and country-side around their town

2. Next we read their blog posts and found out that:

  • Hunting is a popular past time in Wisconsin
  • Sports are very popular – there are basketball teams, football teams and baseball teams
  • Theme Parks and water parks are popular with kids in Wisconsin – just like here in Australia 🙂
  • We learnt that Wisconsin has lots of dairy farms and agriculture – we live in the city and most of us here have never been on a farm
  • In Wisconsin they have a State Fair which sounds the same as our Royal Easter Show here in Sydney
  • Kids in Wisconsin love their pets just like we do 🙂

Thanks Pulaski kids for sharing your state with us – we loved finding out about you and your lives.

Photo A Day H – HMAS Sydney

Standard

HMAS Sydney was an Australian warship that was lost in a battle with a German ship in the Indian Ocean in World War 2.
Both ships sunk without a trace – all 645 men on board the HMAS Sydney died. The HMAS  Sydney and the German vessel were both found in 2008 off the coast of Freemantle in WA.
There are other HMAS warships like the HMAS Melbourne that fought alongside HMAS Sydney.
There is a museum here in Sydney that shows the ruins of the great ship with these words that most people shall know:
Lest we Forget.

PS: HMAS stands for “Her Majesty’s Australian Service” and every naval ship has this in front of the name of the ship.

Frilled Neck-Lizard

Family Name: Agamidae

Binomial Name: Chlamydosaurus Kingii

The frill-necked lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii), also known as the frilled lizard or frilled dragon, is found mainly in northern Australia and southern New Guinea. Its name comes from the large frill around its neck, which usually stays folded against the lizard’s body. It is largely arboreal, spending the majority of the time in the trees. The lizard’s diet insists mainly of insects and small vertebrates. The frill-necked lizard is a relatively large lizard, reaching up to 91.4 cm in length. It may also be kept in captivity.

 AFL

The Australian Football League (AFL) is both the governing body and the major professional competition in the sport of Australian Rules football. The term is sometimes mistakenly used as the name of the code itself.

The AFL premiership season currently consists of 24 home and away rounds, followed by the finals series and the season concludes with the AFL Grand Final at which the winning team receives the premiership cup.

Photo a Day – D for Darling Harbour

Standard

Darling Harbour is a tourist destination in the city. It has parks, museums, the harbour, shopping, restaurants and the IMAX theatre.

It was called Tumbalong (which means the place where seafood is plenty) by the local Cadigal people who lived here before European settlement.

Later when Europeans arrived it was used as a long market wharf. Many immigrants first set foot on Australian soil here when they arrived in Australia.

Darling Harbour was renovated for the 1988 Bi-Centenary celebrations in Sydney and has won many tourism prizes since then.
