Playground Designers

Standard

Stage 2 have been investigating our built environment here at school – specifically our playground areas. They decided that our playground needed an upgrade and so went about deciding how they could change their environment so that it better suited the needs of the students at our school.

First they looked at the playground areas (Areas 6 & 7) and made a list of the things that these areas had, and the things that were missing (but necessary).

Next the students surveyed the rest of the school to find out the types of activities and structures that students of all ages would like to see in a school playground. The Stage 2 students then graphed the responses and were able to reach some conclusions about the types of activities that were popular across the school.

After that was the really fun bit – students worked in groups to design a playground area that incorporated the ideas that the rest of the school wanted. They could add anything they liked, as long as it fit the purposes of safety and need. The groups then used lots of recycled boxes and containers to bring their designs to life! Lots of glueing and taping and creating structures and play equipment!

Lastly students needed to present their model and ideas to the rest of the grade and then everyone would vote on the playground design that they liked the best. Groups had to write persuasive speeches to urge and influence the students and parents and teachers that their playground ideas were the best.

Congratulations to the winning team and their bid – Abdullah, Jessica, Nadia, Hennessey, Andrew and Adam from S2Magnolia.

Please have a look at the wonderful playgrounds designed by our students.

Going Dotty!

Standard

S1 Jacaranda class made their mark today by designing beautiful coloured dots to celebrate International Dot Day.
International Dot Day is a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration” and students get involved by designing wonderful dots and sharing these online.

We watched a film clip of the story “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds, and then had the chance to use lots of coloured papers to make our mark and our dots!

Here are our dots for you to enjoy 🙂

Voices of the World

Standard

We are very excited to be participating, once again, in the wonderful “Voices of the World” global project. Voices of the World is run by Sharon Tonner, from the University of Dundee, and aims to connect children together using their voices rather than the written or typed word. It was also created to enable children to develop an appreciation of different languages, accents and dialects from around the world.

We love to listen to students from around the world whilst watching the fun ways that everyone presents their work.

Below is the Voki we are using to introduce our class to the other participants.

Fabulous Fractions!

Standard

Some students have been investigating fractions in Maths recently. They have been using a website to direct their investigations and have been using coloured blocks to represent different fractions.

The students seem to enjoy using the blocks and have had to think hard to find the correct answers. Working with a friend is very popular because we know that “two heads are better than one!”

If you have a look at the photos you will see that the kids look like they are enjoying their Maths!

Leading the Way

Standard

Is this connected learning or what?

Students from across the world set the pace!

Nadine from the AllStars and Stephie from Argentina have been commenting on each other’s blog for a while now, and have become friends with a shared concern.

With the help of Stephie’s teacher, they have set up a wiki called “Stop Whaling Now”. The girls have decided to mount a campaign to stop whaling. Have a look at their wiki and leave a comment, or join their fight.

It may not look like it, but the AllStars were all very busy and on task last Wednesday!

What sort of task would involve this sort of behaviour?    😯

Our Voices of the World February Task – that’s what      😎

We were discussing, planning, making and then setting up and taking photos for this month’s task on numbers. Great fun, great learning, great teamwork!    🙂

Learning Together

It was great to see the “old” AllStars tutoring the “new” AllStars in the computer room today!   😀

Lots of important information, terrific tips and helpful hints about blogging were passed on to the newer students so that they can get their own blogs up and running as soon as possible.     😉

Now that everyone knows how to leave comments on blogs we can look forward to some interesting and (hopefully)  thought provoking discussions  taking place.  🙄

To all of our blogging friends ..

A heartfelt and HUGE thank you to “you”  – everyone who reads, enjoys and comments on our blog.

We have learnt so much this year, and it is because of “you”. We have blogged because of “you”, we have reflected because of “you” we have shared the events, the fun, the learning, the laughs, the thinking, the working and the people who work in and visit our class.

“You” have made a wonderful difference to how we learn in our room.

“You” have helped us think about our learning, how we do things, why we do things, and how we can learn and work even better and harder.

“You” have shared so much with us – thank you for your comments, your thoughts, your questions, your ideas, your blogs and most importantly your friendship.

We are on holidays now so our blog may be a little idle – but we will be back again in February.

Until then – keep on blogging 🙂
