Our school has an amazing memorial board dedicated to the “old boys” from Moorefields School who served in World War 1.

We will be researching these men to see what they got up to in WW1.

You will need to go straight to this site to search a data base for the information you will need.

National Archives

1. Go to the site

2. Click on RECORD SEARCH

3. Type in  the veteran’s surname

4. Type in the dates from 1914 to 1920

5. Click SEARCH

6. Click on the digital version icon

7. Now you have your veteran’s service records and information!

An interesting site that you may like to explore is the “Adopt a Veteran” Page which is part of the NSW Government ANZAC Commemoration site.

Peter Dalton and the Call to War

Standard

Hello Stage 3 people,

I found this great interactive site about a boy deciding if he should enlist in the army and go to the First World War.

There are some interesting interactives to look at – background information about how the war started, who the enemy countries were, what Australia was like at the time.

Please spend some time looking through the information to broaden your knowledge about WW1, and think about the advice you would give to Peter Dalton.

What would you do??

Unfortunately the site does not work on the iPads, so you will need to use another type of tech to access the site.

Have fun 🙂

ANZAC Day Stories

Standard

ANZAC Day is coming up during the holidays and this week we have been looking at many of the wonderful books and stories about this special day that we have in the Library. Some people remembered the story of Simpson and his Donkey from when they were little, and Carmen was reading a novel “The Donkey Who Carried the Wounded” by Jackie French that explained this story more deeply for an older audience. We love connections and remembered stories and learning more about what has happened in our world.

There are many beautiful picture books for older readers that are new in the Library this year, as well as some very informative non-fiction books on a variety of war topics.

Feel free to come and have a look and borrow one of these lovely books to take home for the holidays, you might just be taking home a new memory!

What do you remember about ANZAC day? Share your memories in the comments section below.

Federation Convention

Standard

federation Convention

All of the Stage 3 students (and the Stage 2 students in Jade!) took part in a mock Federation Convention in the Library today. As delegates we had to make sure that we represented the interests and views of the people who had sent us. We had the very important job of deciding on the location of the new federal parliament – two groups decided to situate the new parliament in a separate territory in NSW called Canberra, while the other group were still deciding where to locate.

Everyone is wearing either a moustache or hat to show that women were not included in this process, and we are all looking serious as we have a huge responsibility to the people of Australia.

There were lots of “OBJECTION!!!!”s and fist thumping – although this was probably because it was fun! Some of the delegates were very serious and made some wonderful contributions to developing the constitution of our new nation!

Great work Stage 3 (and Stage 2 in Jade :-))

What did YOU think of our convention? What the best parts for you? Leave a comment below!

What Do We Know About … Ancient Civilizations?

Standard

This term we are going to be exploring ancient civilizations, so to start us off we needed to know what we already knew.

We had our task ….

… and the way we went about this was to get into groups of 3 or 4 and work together to present our groups’ definition of Ancient Civilizations. It was VERY noisy as each group talked, and acted, and shared and mimed (and occasionally yelled!!!!).

Each group came up with a unique way looking at ancient civilizations, and the audience was able to ask questions and ellicit the ideas of the group members so that we came up with some shared understandings of what we knew about ancient civilizations already.

Hmmmm I wonder where this will lead???

Sorry

A little word that means so much!”Sorry” was said in a very special place in Australia today …….

Sorry is a word not often heard in Parliament. Nevertheless, today Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologized on behalf the present Government to the Indigenous people of Australia.

Many people believe the apology is long overdue, but are glad that it finally came.

Ramiz & Timothy

The “Stolen Generation” were remembered today by all of Australia.

Natalie & Lilly

The Government (in the 1900’s) had done the wrong thing to Indigenous people. They took the children away from their parents just because they didn’t have full Aboriginal background, never to see their parents again! That’s why they are called the “Stolen Generation”.

Momtahina & Nadine

The Government at the time thought they were doing the right thing ….. but Australia wants to say sorry……

Sharon & Kesaia

Today, on the 13th February, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said “Sorry” to the Stolen Generations. We thought it was fair, kind and brilliant; as well as this it was a relief to Indigenous Australians.

Justin & Winson

Reconciliation: a long word as its a long story ….. A long time ago , from the 1930’s the Government took the aboriginal children because they thought that it was the right thing to do. But nowdays we think that in most ways it was bad. Because of this our new Prime Minister said “Sorry”.

Dragons are Lurking!

Standard

Today we have been investigating dragons – it seems that many places and people right around the world share stories, myths and legends about dragons.

Do you know any stories about dragons? What are dragons like in the stories that you know?

Do you believe that they are/were real?

Do you think that dragons are related to these two “real” Australian dragons –

Our Macbeth Play – Thanks (and apologies) to Shakespeare!

Standard

 dsc03726.JPG

As part of our “History Never Repeats?” question we have been reading some of Shakespeare’s plays, because Shakespeare was an important part of history as well as writing a number of historical plays.

We have chosen to perform “Macbeth” for our class item in Assembly this week. After being inspired by Kindergarten’s performance of the story “A Dark, Dark Tale” we decided to re-write Macbeth in the same way.

To help us sort out the parts of the story we would perform, we all used Mind Maps to organise and identify the important parts of the story. You can see a composite of what we came up with on this Bubbleshare presentation ……..

[bubbleshare 232192.d42832b4179]

We had to add the “Dark, dark” tale bits to join the story together.

Now we have to work out who will be each character and practise on the stage.

We hope to video our performance and put it, and some still photos, on our blog after Friday, so stay tuned ……

What do you think Shakespeare would say about us changing his play?

MissionMaker

Standard

We have been  using a game making program called MissionMaker to make learning about history fun and interesting. We have been researching a person, place or civilization from either of these periods: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern  as part of our “History Never Repeats?” Project.

We have to apply the information that we gathered from our “History Never Repeats?” Project and apply it to our MissionMaker game. We are nearly ready to make our own MissionMaker game.

So far each person in the class has created a Mind Map and created a game story related to their game.We are going to use the game story and Mind Map as the base for our game.

We have been trying to transfer our game ideas, characters and worlds to the ones available in MissionMaker. This has not always been easy because of the limited worlds, characters and props in the game.

What do you think? HISTORY

Standard

The AllStars have been studying history this year and are pondering the saying

“History never repeats”

Read this article about Stonehenge and then leave a comment about what you think!

😕

What were you thinking about as you read this article?

What surprised you about this article? Why were you surprised?

What sorts of images or feelings did the article stimulate?

Why do you think scientists are so interested in finding out how people lived in times past?

Does the information that the scientists gather have any impact on our lives today?

Do you think that a shared knowledge & understanding of times past can / does help us understand problems and issues of today?

🙂
