Holy Bagumba!

Stage 2, here is a great little story that we will be reading together over the next few weeks.

It’s about a superhero squirrel called Ulysses and his friend Flora Belle Buckman.

The story has many references to comics and the language and features found in comics – click here to read comics online at

Playing With Skitch

Standard

Yee- Ha!

We finally got to use our iPads in the Library today 🙂

We had a play with the “Skitch” app – which allows you to add words and drawings onto photos.

First we listened to the story “The Little Red Hen” and discussed the characters and the words and actions that helped us work out the personalities of each of the characters. Then we had to choose a character and think of some other words we could use to describe the character and their actions.

Next we got to use the iPads to show what we thought! We had to take a photo of the character and add the words we had come up with to describe the character. We had to take turns using the iPad, make suggestions, share the thinking and make sure that each person contributed equally to the task.

Here are some photos of us working together – as you can see we are loving this  🙂

We will share our creations very soon!

“I Won’t Say Please!”

Standard

Kindergarten have been learning about our school values of RESPECT, TOLERANCE, HONESTY and INTEGRITY.

We read the book “I Won’t Say Please!” by Mij Kelly to explore the concept of respect further. The Kinder Kids were shocked at how rude Queen Bee was as she ordered everyone around. She wanted everything her way and right now!

By the middle of the story Queen Bee was really angry, had had no breakfast,  had no friends and had locked herself in the dungeon and thrown away the key! Luckily for Queen Bee  a little friend was there to help her, and having learned her lesson Queen Bee began using her manners and showing respect to the people around her.

We made some bees ourselves too – but our bees have great manners and try to use them all the time!

Conscience Alley

Standard

Today we tried a great thinking activity during reading.

MrsP was reading us “Rowan of Rin” and the villagers were trying to decide whether or not to climb the mountain to see if they could find out what was blocking the stream.

We stopped reading and got into two groups:

  • one group discussed why the villagers should go to find out why the stream had stopped;
  • the second group discussed why the villagers shouldn’t go.

Then the two groups stood face to face and made an alley-way up the middle. Then we chose a student to be a villager and walk up the alley.

As the villager walked up the alley, everyone (one person at a time) said their a reason to either go up/ or not go up the mountain. DSC09857DSC09858

At the end of the alley the villager had to make a decision about what she would do. Today the villager decided to go up the mountain!

This was just as well, because the villagers in the story also decided they had to climb the mountain too 🙂

  • Do you believe that this activity helped you to think more deeply about the decision that the villagers had to make?
  • Did you feel more involved in the story after thinking about the story in this way?

Read our comments section to hear about the books we love – maybe you will find a new book to try for yourself 🙂

Ask Me!

Standard

The conference in Washington was HUGEl! There were over 18 000 people there!

I came across this sign many times while walking around the conference centre, and I thought that it was a great idea.

How could we use a sign like this in our classroom?

Let’s see how many ideas we can come up with ……

Here’s one to get you going:

1. If we are doing a lesson in Maths and I’m good at this topic I could put an “ASK ME” sign on my desk

PS: Prizes are on offer  😉

Family Traditions and Beliefs

Standard

The students from Room 202 have been writing about the special traditions their families have – special days, special routines, special sayings.

Have a read of their posts over on their blog, and then come back here to leave a comment about the special traditions you have in your family.

What special days do you celebrate? What does your family do to celebrate these days?

Does your family have their own traditions/sayings/routines when you go to bed or get up in the morning or when its your birthday or the weekend?

Lets share our family traditions will they be the same or different?

Blog Action Day

Standard

We are writing posts on our own blogs to support Blog Action Day 2008.

We have been looking at how poverty affects education, and how education can help the fight against poverty.

We’ve looked at how school is important to us, why education should be available to all students, and the various places around our school that are important to us.

Click on our blog posts on October 15th to read what we’ve got to say!

Join in the conversation by leaving comments or writing your own blog post.

Let’s hear your voice too 🙂
