The Lorax

Standard

Many students in S23Jade have been thinking and talking about the environmental issues raised in the Dr Seuss story “The Lorax”.

They have discussed, acted out and spoken at a town meeting using the different perspectives of the creatures involved in the story.

As a “wrap up” activity students were asked to design a Thneed Factory that was more environmentally positive and sustainable than the one in the story. They were asked to consider the energy used, the pollution released and the effect on the living creatures around the factory, the noise and the transportation of the finished Thneeds around the country.

There were many fantastic ideas and suggestions made by the students – please look at the following pictures of parts of their work.

What do you think? What would you do to improve the environment at the Thneed Factory? Leave a comment below.

Stage 2 are Entymologists

Standard

Stage 2 have also been learning in the Veggie Patch this term. They have been conducting science experiments using plants, learning about pollination and classifying bugs.

Each week a new group of students works in the Library to investigate how entymologists group bugs. We found out

  • that living things are grouped into species, and that each species have characteristics special to just their own group.
  •  that a lot of bugs are arthropods which means they have legs with lots of joints.
  • Insects have 6 legs, three body parts and usually have wings.

We had fun collecting bugs from the veggie patch and observing them to see if we could work out if they were an insect or not. We tried to draw scientific drawings of our creatures. Here are some for you to enjoy ….

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Back from the holidays and everyone is super excited to share what they have done over the past two weeks. We wrote a word to describe how we felt and drew an image of what we did. There were so many things we put them in a newspaper!

Beat It!

Standard

Just beat it!

That’s what we were doing for such a long time today 🙂

No one really minded that much because we were beating egg whites, egg yolks and cream to make …….

ICECREAM!

We used Ms York’s famous recipe (supposedly easy!!!!!!) and once we got over the “egg episode” we were on our way!

Lots of stirring, beating, mixing and folding – and yes, now we know the meanings of all of these words – before we spooned the ice-cream into cups.  We are hoping that the ice-cream cups taste delicious after a night in the freezer,

hmmmmmm …..

they will be “just the thing” after a sausage sizzle tomorrow for lunch 😀

The Lorax – Our Play

Standard

Last Friday we had to lead the school assembly and present a performance item as well.

Some people volunteered to conduct the assembly and others wanted to perform, whilst the rest preferred to work “backstage” and help organise and move chairs and props around.

So everyone had a job to do! We all worked together to ensure that the assembly and the performance ran smoothly. We felt proud of ourselves because each of us took responsibility for what we had to do, and we all fulfilled our roles to the best of our abilities. Well done us 😀

Here are some photos of us on the stage and later in our classroom. Stay tuned for the video – it is coming (I promise – just editing it – MrsP)

Tundra Travel Team

Standard

Our task for homework this week was to create a travel poster advertising an ecosystem that we had investigated at school. Here is Deon’s wonderful effort:

TUNDRA TRAVEL TEAM

Is it a hot summer day today? Are you sick of the endless summer sun’s scorching heat?

Then what are you doing sitting here – get up and go to the tundra!

Have the holiday of a lifetime and ask the “Tundra Travel Team” to give you a chilled, relaxing and memorable journey to the tundra.

If you love the sight of the sun, come in the summer and experience 24 hour sunlight.

If you want to bring out the dark-side in you – come in winter and experience 24 hour … DARKNESS!!!

Walk in the soggy frozen permafrost while viewing spectacular and breathtaking species of animals and plants like the miniature willow tree, the musk oxen, the arctic fox, the caribou and many more.

So it’s your choice: you really can come on a memorable trip to the tundra!

Or …..

You can sit here reading this pamphlet.

Who spent 3 days in her pyjamas???

Who was at the zoo and had her hair nibbled by a giraffe??? (mmm ………  tasty 🙂 )

Who learnt how to eat chips with chopsticks?  (Clever)

Who opened all the kitchen cupboards with his feet?? (I’m glad that you know you can do this! – Must try it myself)

Who had dinner in a hotel and saw a cake in the shape of a pram??

Who else had dinner in the city and ate chicken …….. FEET !!!! ?????

Who was the couch potato who watched the World Cup on the couch, in her pjs, for 3 days???

Who ate rice every day for 3 days?

Who was it that went to the corner shop in their pyjamas????

Who drank water, then was whacked in the stomach and the water came out his nostrils?????

Who ate sushi every day??

And who kicked the door and broke their toe???

I promise I won’t tell who you are – but you are all very unusual  :-0
