Playing With Skitch

Standard

Yee- Ha!

We finally got to use our iPads in the Library today 🙂

We had a play with the “Skitch” app – which allows you to add words and drawings onto photos.

First we listened to the story “The Little Red Hen” and discussed the characters and the words and actions that helped us work out the personalities of each of the characters. Then we had to choose a character and think of some other words we could use to describe the character and their actions.

Next we got to use the iPads to show what we thought! We had to take a photo of the character and add the words we had come up with to describe the character. We had to take turns using the iPad, make suggestions, share the thinking and make sure that each person contributed equally to the task.

Here are some photos of us working together – as you can see we are loving this  🙂

We will share our creations very soon!

The Wind

Standard

The Wind
by Robert Louis Stevenson

I saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky;
And all around I heard you pass,
Like ladies’ skirts across the grass–
O wind, a-blowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

I saw the different things you did,
But always you yourself you hid.
I felt you push, I heard you call,
I could not see yourself at all–
O wind, a-blowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

O you that are so strong and cold,
O blower, are you young or old?
Are you a beast of field and tree,
Or just a stronger child than me?
O wind, a-blowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

This is a famous poem written especially for children. You can find this poem and others like it HERE

What do you think the wind is?
Is it a wild creature or an animal or something else altogether?

The Premier’s Reading Challenge

Standard

After a late start and some technical issues, we are finally registered for the 2012 Premier’s Reading Challenge. This is not a competition but the chance for your child to challenge themselves to read a number of exciting and interesting books.

Students choose a minimum number of books to read from the appropriate PRC list and five of their own personal choice books, which are recorded as read on the Child’s Personal Reading Log.

To experience a book, a child can listen to the book, participate in shared reading or read part or all of the book independently.

Students in each grade have to meet the following reading goals:

Challenge

Number of books needed to complete the Challenge

Minimum number of PRC books for your Challenge

Maximum number of personal choice books

PRC booklist selection

“The Tale of Despereaux” Business Cards

Standard

We finished reading the story “The Tale of Despereaux” (warning: the movie is NOTHING much like the book!)recently, and we were asked to think carefully about one of the main characters and about a job they could dom in real life.

We discussed all of our ideas and tried to make sure that the jobs we chose were related to the character and what had happened in the story. We used the information from the text and our background knowledge of jobs and working – which means that we were INFERRING.

Then we had to design a business card for this character. Business cards are used by people to share the telephone number, website, address and important information about the job. Once again we had to make sure what we designed was related to the story.

Here are some of the fantastic ideas we come up with:

The Cook = restaurant, soup kitchen

Despereaux Tilling = therapist

Miggery Sow = cleaner

Rosscuro = assasin

Here are our finished examples:

Testing Week!

Standard

This week we are having our end of year tests in Maths and Reading.

In Reading we read out loud to check our fluency and answer some oral comprehension questions. We also did a written reading test today.

The Maths test will be later this week.

What Do We Know About … Ancient Civilizations?

Standard

This term we are going to be exploring ancient civilizations, so to start us off we needed to know what we already knew.

We had our task ….

… and the way we went about this was to get into groups of 3 or 4 and work together to present our groups’ definition of Ancient Civilizations. It was VERY noisy as each group talked, and acted, and shared and mimed (and occasionally yelled!!!!).

Each group came up with a unique way looking at ancient civilizations, and the audience was able to ask questions and ellicit the ideas of the group members so that we came up with some shared understandings of what we knew about ancient civilizations already.

Hmmmm I wonder where this will lead???

Book Week Buddies

Standard

What a special morning!

We all spent the morning reading with some younger chilfdren – and just look at us – it was fun!

We all remembered how great it was when we were little to have someone read to you, or tell you a story. So now it was our turn to be the reader today.

The big kids tried hard to make the smaller kids feel welcomed, safe and at ease. It was easy to tell when the shyness was wearing off, because people started talking to each other and sharing ideas and thoughts.

As a reminder of the morning we made masks together and watched a movie that Mrs Knight made. The movie was called “Book Week Buddies” can you guess what it was about????
