Improving our Fluency

Standard

We are trying to improve our oral reading at the moment!

We practise reading out loud to a partner for one minute every day. Then we count how many lines we have read – we are reading more lines every day!

We have each identified a fluency target as well. After identifying aspects of a fluent reader we came up with individual targets to work at. Here are some of the targets people are working on at the moment:

  • improving expression when reading so that we sound as if we are talking
  • reading in longer phrases so that our reading is smooth
  • using the punctuation to help us when reading – pausing and stopping to read more naturally
  • reading a slower pace so that we can understand what we are reading

We will be having tests in the next few weeks so we are hoping to show improvements in them. Wish us luck 🙂

  2. Hi Gavin
thanks for visiting our blog and leaving a comment. We have something called novel studies in our class and we work on a three day rotation. One of the days is a fluency day where we try to improve our fluency in reading and develop good reading habits. The books we are reading at the moment are – The Word Wizards – Saving Finnegan The Radical Readers – The Hundred mile an hour dog.

Have you ever read any of these books?
